Time Out KL: On the Up January

Simon Says: Valentine's Day is just two weeks away. Get your flowers and gift here.

I've missed the one on November and December due to my busy schedule. So, die die also I must make my way to the Time Out KL: On the Up in January. Made my way to No Black Tie after work. Kel Li of course is at the counter selling the entrance ticket. Nigel of course was there to take video and pictures. David, Hsu Jen, Joshua, and Aaron went to makan first before the show starts. Then Yatz came a few minutes after me. This time David's sister came too.

The first to perform is a guy whom call himself 2storeyheart, I heard Two Story High wtf. One thing for sure that his songs is damn boring. It is like the same tune sang in different lyrics. He sang six songs. Oh, the suffer. He sang too loudly too in such a small acoustic venue. He just playing his guitar no need to shout unless there's a band backing you up lah dey.

2StoreyHeart

The next up is BrokenScar and I think people in our table has been waiting for this. After listening to two songs they performed, I know why. They are very good. I even took video clips of them performing but I don't know why I bloody having trouble uploading to YouTube. So, you might want to visit Nigel's blog for more high quality video and the rest of the gang's blog for more pictures lol.

I ordered a bucket of Heineken. Drank 3 bottle, vomited after having food in mamak. Why?

Mood was brought to a slow when Izzy Mohamed performed. Performing slow pieces. Her voice is really jazzy. My kind of music. I especially like the song titled "Pelangi".

Nice to listen to slow music in a dimly lit venue.

The trance techno-ish Secret Love Affair is the last to perform. The vocal is not bad and the music is quite trance, makes me feels like I had 'ecstasy' or something like that. They also did a whole instrumental piece which is real nice.

Let's hope I'll be free to make it to the one on February.

Laughing Out Loud On Thursday Night

Last Thursday as I've announced in my previous post, I went to Little Havana again for a dose of the best medicine. Was rushing from 1 Utama after eating my White Oreo bagel. Normally it will only take me 30 minutes max to reach there from 1 Utama but that night because of this natural disaster, it took me about 1 hour plus to reach. Lucky for me the show haven't started yet when I reached Little Havana.

Time Out KL put up a new background for the stage. Look grander.

The usual suspects were there, Kel Li, Yatz, Joshua, Aaron, Nigel, David, and Jen. This time Fuzz and Celine joined us too.

While waiting for the show starts, as usual bloggers will be bloggers.

The venue is full house again. Shows that people like a good laugh in this stressful city.

Matt is again the MC for the night. This time he sang songs to introduce the stand up comedian that will be performing.

Imagine Matt singing low, low, low, low.....

First up is Zac. He wasn't schedule to perform that night, he was standing in for Alfred whom can't make it in the last minute. So I think he was not well prepared which makes his performance a bit off his usual standard. He's very good when I watched his performance in Comedy Thursday November.

Zac dishing out his stuff.

This is Chi Ho. His jokes are not bad. Like he's impersonation of a Chinese Ah Beng lol. I like his finishing joke the most about how the dance steps of Michael Jackson came about. Salah parking oii!

Chi Ho with his Ah Beng look.

I don't know why but this picture reminds me of Heroes.

Introducing another first timer that night. Also the first female stand up comedian ever to take the stand in Time Out KL: Comedy Thursday. Introducing Davina Goh. Seeing that she's a first timer, I tried very hard to catch her jokes but HOW CAN I LAUGH AT A JOKE WHEN SHE'S SHOUTING OUT THE PUNCHLINE! I can't catch a freaking word of that she's shouted out.

Oh, Happy Belated Birthday to you Davina. They presented a cake to her that night, her birthday was last Tuesday if I remembered correctly.

After a 10 minutes break. It's Kavin's turn. He's a funny guy. Especially like his joke about "the man there will come over to take you candy", a bit like Russell Peters "someone will get a spanking tonight" joke. Still I think it's original.

Kavin the funny guy.

Last but not least, we have Jimmy from Canada who hates Singapore that he even wrote a song call "I Hate Singapore". The lyrics is so politically correct lol. Jimmy is a natural, maybe because he's a seasoned stand up comedian with years of experience performing in Canada and Singapore. As the say, they always save the best for the last.

Jimmy singing "I Hate Singapore".

After the show, we went to Jalan Alor to eat supper. Yat told us that there's a Alor Corner there that serve up some good nasi goreng. On the way walking to Jalan Alor, Celine and I bumped in to this man in silver.

I read about the gold man in The Star, didn't know there's a silver man too.

Oh, Time Out: On the Up December in No Black Tie will be on in two weeks time. 17th of December. Check out Time Out KL for more info.

Time Out KL: On The Up November

I went to another Time Out KL event last week. I was late to the venue because I went to Pecha Kucha first in KLCC first. More about that later.

I arrived at No Black Tie at about 10.30 pm hence I missed An Honest Mistake's performance. Read from Yatz that they're not bad. David, Hsu Jen, Nigel, Aaron, Joshua, Celine, Fuzz, Dillon, Sue, Dahlia, Josephine were there too. Kelli was there to show me where the guys were sitting.

The Bassment Syndicate was already playing half way when I took my seat. Lucky there's still a table left because the whole place is packed. These group basically consist of two bassists and a drummer. There's no vocal here just pure instrument. Their music is somewhat more toward Jazz. It's the kind of music I'll listen to when I want to relax. While there's two bassists, one is playing high bass 4 strings and another is low bass with five strings. While jazz is not for everyone, I sure find their music quite to my liking. It has the calm soothing effect.

The Bassment Syndicate

After a short break, it was Alaling & the Kaya Kok's turn to perform. She's one of the reason I detour all the way from KLCC to catch this event. As usual, Alaling sang with her sweet and soothing voice. After singing her usual hit single First Time, this time she sang a new song that she named Facebook Song. Talk about catching up with the fad.

Alaling + The Kaya Kok

They also made a MV for the Facebook song.

After that, it's the last but not least Rendra Zawawi. He's the favourite of the audience because he literally rock the house. His band also consist of a violin and a saxophone on top of the guitars and drum.

Rendra and his band

The Sex Sax player

The violinist.

When we thought that that is the end for the night, Rendra gave us the audience a surprise. He asked our very homegrown Youtube artiste, Kokokaina who happens to be in the house to sing to us one of her well known song. She is indeed very good. She has a strong voice for such a petite person.

Kokokaina doing her stuff.

Then we end the night, which is midnight. Now who says we don't have local talent. There's so many independent talented singer out there in Malaysia that need our support. So look out for the next Time Out KL: On the Up and come to give our local singer some support.

Another

Event

The first time I see Alaling's performance is at Nokia IAC event.

Alaling performing in Nokia IAC in the Zouk.

She's very friendly and like to camwhore too. lol

The second time I saw her perform, is in Groove Junction. Doing her original song "First Time".

She's very serious about her performance

But still she can be very down to earth...

The third time is just recently, she performed at Nokia Nuffnang Silent Halloween Party. As usual, doing some jazzy groove.

Peace!

So, grab the opportunity now this Wednesday to catch Alaling & the Kaya Kok live in No Black Tie. Brought to you by Time Out KL.

Time Out Comedy Thursday Night, Little Havana

Ah, I am off shift and got nothing to do, since not working on a boring Thursday. Wait, lucky I found out about Time Out Comedy Thursday Night from Kel Li and Nigel. If not, I'll be bored to death. The event is organized by Time Out KL magazine, which provide a platform for our local stand up comedians to try out their talent. Just pay RM 20 at the door or if you print out the ticket from here, it will only cost you RM 10. Event will be held every first Thursday of the month. Get your updates here.

Okay, moving on. So, I've reach Little Havana and nice people like David, Hsu Jen, Yatz, Joshua, Aaron, Nigel and of course Kel Li were there.

Little Havana

First let me takes you around the venue first.

Cozy sofa where we sat while waiting the event to start.

I like the wooded furniture in Little Havana.

Now let's us move upstairs to the 1st floor, where the event will be held.

We came very early and so click, click ,click.

Most table are reserved. So, please make reservation too next month.

The launch issue of TimeOut KL, who's the girl in the cover? It's Joyce the Fairy lah.

Ordered myself a mug of Carlsberg Draft RM 9 nett.

And a plate of fried calamari, RM 12 nett. Not bad the calamari but the batter is a bit too thick to my liking.

Let the show begins. Matt is the MC of the night, he can tell some jokes too, don't pray-pray.

Matt warming up the crowds.

The first up, is a first timer, Faisal. Well, all I can say is that he came very unprepared, as you see he even got his gag script with him. My advise for him is to have more body movement, voice mimicking and most importantly practice, practice, practice. Hope, next time Faisal will give a better show.

Faisal, whom is kinda nervous that night.

Next up is Yugi. A very lively comedian with voice mimicking and body movement. One of my favourite that night. The best part I like is him mimicking Yogi bear.

Yugi doing his stuff.

After that we have a 15 minutes break from the show. The place is packed with people, I tell you.

Oh, now only I noticed Yatz's head is there.

After the break, we continue with Alfred. Not too bad, some of his jokes are kind of meant for men, so ladies you might get offended if you don't come here with an open mind. As, I always think in mind for this kind of stand up comedy, it's just for laughs, so no hard feeling.

Yatz's long lost brother, Alfred. Just kidding lah.

Zac is next. He lost his joke book when his car was broken into, and he joke about what the thief is going to make out of the joke book. I like the impersonation of his gf when he ask her to shut up.

The final stand up comedian of the night is a very experience comedian, Hishamudin. Not our Education Minister, although he can be quite a comedian himself since parliament is now like a circus. His jokes will be rated PL 18 and will mostly be censored if shown in a public hall. So, one really have to be open minded with his jokes.

"Do you have a car?"

Even though not the jokes are great but I did have a good laugh from the show, overall. After the show, we adjourned to a nearby mamak restaurant and talk about the jokes that we like or dislike that night. Looking forward to the next Comedy Thursday Night.

One can see KL Tower from Little Havana.

P.S. Go to Nigel's post for the video clips of the show.
