Ham Jean Bang (咸煎饼) in Section 17

It was a Tuesday afternoon if I remembered correctly. It is a public holiday but because it's a Tuesday I was on shift. After having lunch at Restoran Jackson in Section 17 (one of my favourite place for lunch when I work morning shift on a Public Holiday or Sunday). I saw a small white lorry parked outside. As a go for a closer look, I saw a variety of 'hum jean bang' (咸煎饼). Usually it's a small stall selling the same thing outside. Maybe the lorry only comes here on Tuesday and the small stall closed on the same day.

Normally 'hum jean bang' (咸煎饼) only comes with two fillings, plain (i think there's five spices powder in it (五香粉)) and red bean paste (豆沙). This mobile stall not only have the two flavours but a few more new fillings that I haven't seen in a 'hum jean bang' (咸煎饼) before.

There's yam paste (芋头), chocolate (巧克力), coconut, pandan, sweet corn and lotus paste (莲蓉). Not only that, for the 'yao char kwai' (油条/油炸鬼) there's also a garlic flavour one. However there's only one flavour for the 'ma kiok' (马脚) or "horse leg".

I decided to buy some for tea time later. I bought yam paste and pandan fillings 'hum jean bang'. Also the garlic flavoured 'yao char kwai'. I like the yam paste filling which is not very sweet and also I like the black sesame on the skin. I think yam paste is the only one that is covered with black sesame.

Yam paste 'hum jean bang'.

While the pandan filling is not too bad it tasted kind of weird in a ' hum jean bang'. Maybe it should stick back to cakes or bread or puff for pandan filling.

Pandan 'hum jean bang'.

The garlic 'yao char kwai' doesn't look different from the normal one except for the strong garlic smell. It's like eating garlic bread only crunchier.

Garlic 'yao char kwai'.

All the new flavour 'hum jean bang' are selling for RM 1 each while the normal two are selling for RM 0.80 each. I forgot how much is the garlic 'yao char kwai'.

My Lunch: Thai Stall in Restoran Jackson, Section 17, Petaling Jaya

There is one Thai stall that sells quite authentic Thai small fry in Restoran Jackson in Section 17, Petaling Jaya. There's a variety of fried rice that you can order from such as Thai fried rice, prawn fried rice, pineapple fried rice and etc. I suspect that the owner of this stall was once working for the Thai fried rice stall in Restoran Say Huat just opposite Restoran Jackson. I think that's why the quality of the Thai fried rice stall in Say Huat dropped.

The Thai stall in Jackson not only sells fried rice but also have a few Thai dishes like Thai style stir-fried pork rice, chicken feet mango salad, prawn mango salad, stir-fried petai with prawn rice, and a few more dishes that I don't remember.

Chicken feet mango salad.

The chicken feet mango salad is very nice. Just the right sourness. My favourite except for the fried rice is the Thai style stir-fried pork rice. The pork is stir-fried with a lot of Thai basil which make the dish very aromatic and appetizing.

Thai style Stir-fried pork rice.

I've try the stir-fried petai sotong rice which is very good too. This place is a good choice for a more affordable Thai affair is there's craving. Too bad I only come here on Sunday when I am working morning shift.

Maybe next time I come here I'll try something different. Do give it a try if you want to try affordable authentic Thai style small fry dishes.

My Lunch: Robert Fried Kueh Tiow, Section 17, Petaling Jaya

First of My Lunch series. This is short food post of the food that I eat during lunch time while I am working. As I work in the IT services industry and have to do swing shift, so sometime my lunch will also meant my supper. Also because this is my daily normal makan session so I don't bring out my digital camera, so most of the pictures in this series will be taken from my LG GW525's 3.0 Megapixel phone camera. Quality of the pictures is of course lower than my usual food post.

Okay. It was a Sunday afternoon (yes, my shift starts on Sunday instead of Monday, so there's no Monday's blue for me on the bright side), and it's time for lunch. On Sunday, as usual I'll drive to Section 17, Petaling Jaya for food. Section 17 is like a little food heaven with variety of nice foods. That day, I suddenly have a craving for Char Kueh Tiow.

No worries because one of the best Char Kueh Tiow in Klang Valley is at Restoran Say Huat. Robert's Char Kueh Tiow has been operating for a very long time in Klang Valley. Fried with enough "wok hei" the flat rice noodle is fried till dry which is more towards Penang style unlike the KL wet version. Using mid size prawn, which is quite fresh too. The prawn is bigger than other CKT stalls that I've patronned before but still no match of the huge prawn used in Lorong Selamat's CKT. Well, Lorong Selamat one cost me RM 6 while Robert's cost me RM 4.50 for a big portion.

There are the usual kao choi, taugeh, and blood cockles. There's also Chinese sausage, which most CKT in KL don't use. The taste is just like Penang but still lack a bit of thing that I can't really make out of. Nevertheless it's one of the best CKT that I've tasted in Klang Valley. Be in mind that the portion here is quite big, so for small eater it's better to order a small portion (RM 4) and share :p. Big eater order a plate of big size (RM 4.50) will do.

Hong Kee (洪记糖水) Dessert Stall at Section 17

One fine Sunday afternoon, where I have to work the morning shift. So, in the afternoon about 5pm , time to get something to filled up my stomach. 5pm is kind of a hard time for food because it's not lunch, it's not tea time and it's not dinner time.

Good thing is that I know that there's some food stalls in Section 17 will be opening for business around 4.30 pm. There's a dessert stall there named Hong Kee (洪记糖水) Dessert Stall that sells a lot of variety of dessert that is very yummy. Some of the dessert there are quite hard to find else where because not many other dessert places serve it.

As the day is very hot and humid, so I ordered a bowl of watermelon soup cool my body. While this sweet soup has cooling effect but it is served warm lol. Not many places I see do watermelon in this way. I like it very much, it's not very sweet and the watermelon meat is still quite crunchy.

Watermelon sweet soup.

I also had chee cheong fun from the stall next to this dessert stall. There are a lot of other food stalls around here. I think their food is not bad because they've been around for a long time already. At first I ask for curry to go with my chee cheong fun but alas it's not ready yet, so sweet sauce and chili sauce it is. Chee cheong fun is not too bad.

Chee cheong fun.

One small stall but a lot of different sweet soup. You name it they got it. Sometime I think a bowl of simple sweet soup is enough to win over all those fancy dessert with many other items mixed together. There's papaya sweet soup, the common red bean, sea coconut, watermelon and many others that I can't even name.

Craving for sweet soup? No problem, Hong Kee will surely have one that will suit your appetite. One can also order curry mee, pan mee, pork mee, hakka mee and whatever food there is from the stalls near Hong Kee. Best of all is that the sweet soup is not too sweet.

Roast Duck at Weng Kee Restaurant

Simon Says: Girls, are you prepared for this coming Saturday MDG2 Audition in Impiana KLCC Hotel & Spa. I was invited to be there. See you all there this Sat. ;)

The Rise of the Lycans starts Jan 09 << Does Vampire eat roast duck?

Warning: Tidak Ditanggung Halal

It was another lazy Sunday afternoon and I am working morning shift. As always me and my colleagues will drive out for lunch on Sunday morning shift. My colleague Fam is driving and we still haven't decided where to eat. I'm not really sure how he end up driving to Section 17, PJ.

Then one of my other colleague Felice suggested to have roast duck, and since there's not much time, so I suggested Weng Kee Restaurant that specialized in roast duck. There we go to have roast duck for lunch.

Weng Kee doesn't hang the roast ducks like other roast duck eateries do and the stall is located deep inside the restaurant. If you don't go in and see the plate of roast duck on the table that other customer is having, you won't know that they are selling roast duck.

Char siew and siew cheong.

Besides roast duck, Weng Kee also got char siew (BBQ Pork) and siew cheong (Chinese sausage). The char siew here is roast until quite dry and dark yet when I chew it is very tender and full of the sweet taste of caramel, sweeter than the one I had in Famous Seremban. I still say that char siew in Famous Seremban is the best I've eaten yet. The siew cheong is not bad at all with the right proportion of lard and liver.

Rating: 3.5/5

Roast duck.

We were quite disappointed with the roast duck. The skin is not crispy at all. Lucky the taste is not bad and the meat is quite juicy. Nothing to wow about, any roast duck stall in Kepong sells much better roast duck than here. Maybe next time we should go to Sunrise Roast Duck at Seapark to try the roast duck rice there.

Rating: 2.5/5

Sauce for the roast duck.

You might want to give the duck a miss if you happen to come here. I won't might coming back for the siew cheong though.

My plate of white rice with the dishes. The green vege comes by default I think.

Down our lunch with a glass or iced herbal tea. Not much choices of beverage here.

6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak, Section 17

This place has been blogged by many already, so I think there's not much introduction needed. Situated in Happy Mansion, Section 17, Petaling Jaya where you also can find Food Foundry, and My Elephant.

This is almost three weeks ago when my friends asked me to go for dinner. I've been here a few times already and I got to know this place when I was reading KY's blog 2 years ago to find what's good to eat around PJ area.

The full name is 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak

My friend ordered their famous minced pork with belacan nasi lemak. I think I had nasi lemak for breakfast that day so I didn't order nasi lemak. I found that the minced pork is a bit too salty for my taste bud but overall the coconut rice is fragrant and cook just right, and the sambal is nice too. Not many places you can find minced pork with belacan nasi lemak.

Rating: 3/5

The minced pork nasi lemak

For me, I ordered their Special Chicken Chop. The normal chicken chop is grilled while this one is fried until golden crispiness and top with brown sauce. The outside is so crispy while the meat is still juicy. It goes well with the brown sauce. The fries and salad that comes as the side dishes are just normal.

Rating 3.5/5

Special Chicken Chop

The real McCoy in 6 to 10 is actually their Red Wine Pork Ribs. I only had it once because it doesn't comes with a cheap price tag. For you pork lovers out there when you come here you must order their Red Wine Pork Ribs. If you are a small eater, be sure to share it with your friend because the portion is quite big. I don't have a picture of the pork rib. I'll update it next time I go there again.

Rating: 4/5

I downed my heaty chicken chop with a glass of refreshing lime juice. Serving Western Grill & Nasi Lemak in Section 17, reasonably priced, and not too bad service. This is why my friend and I will drop by for dinner once in while. Note that their Pineapple Pork Chop is not bad too.

Lunch in Section 17

Sunday: Sunny

Dear diary,

Today I went for lunch in Section 17 from my office. I was having the urge to eat the 'siu yuk' (roast pork) in Hong Seng Restaurant which is opposite the CIMB Bank in the Section 17 market. I reached there at about 1 p.m. and the 'siu yuk' was already sold out :(

All that is left is a few pieces of siu yuk that another customer already booked. All I can do is take the pictures of the 'siu yuk' and look at it to calm my urge for this yummy 'siu yuk'.

No more siu yuk! Argh......

Because there's no more 'siu yuk', I'll have to go to Lucky Restaurant a shop lot away to find another good lunch to eat.

Do you know what's the best food in Lucky Seafood Restaurant Dear Diary?

Well it's wantan mee of course.

The wantan mee prepared by Hong Kee here is handmade. The texture of the mee is so 'Q'. The char siew might not be as good as Restoran Famous Seremban but it's good nevertheless. The cook say that to cook the mee until the texture is so 'Q' the timing of cooling and cooking the mee is very important. The sauce used for this dry wantan mee is just right not overly dry or overly wet. In less than 5 minutes, the whole plate of wantan mee has gone to my stomach.

Rating: 4/5

Lucky for me there's still some mee left, if I come half an hour later, I might have to go to Say Huat Restaurant to eat Thai Prawn Fried rice instead.

Dear Diary, some of my friends also had their own opinion about having lunch in Section 17. I'll put in their views here:

Dear Diary, from now on I'll remember to come before 12 p.m. to prevent another disappointment of not able to eat the 'siu yuk' in Hong Seng Restaurant. See you another day Dear Diary.

Hair Cut @ The Cut

Taking a break from my Singapore trip post. Last Tuesday, my colleague suddenly want to swap shift with me for Tuesday and Wednesday. Which means, I don't have to work from Tuesday to Saturday. It's like a week of holiday.

Coincidentaly TheNurse came back to Malaysia from Saudi for holiday. Since her boyfriend, TheDoctor have to work, so we went for lunch in Pasta Zanmai, 1 Utama and after that to The Cut in Section 17 for my hair cut. Will post about the food in Pasta Zanmai next, since my previous post is also about food, so don't want to post so many food post in a row.

This is the first time I come to The Cut in Section 17. I've known it for a while already because I come to Section 17 for lunch quite frequently for the Hong Seng's 'siew yok' (Roast Pork). TheNurse wanted to wash + blow her curled hair for dinner and I wanted a hair cut.

Steve washing TheNurse's hair

Steve attended TheNurse and Steven attended to me. Steven asked me how would I like to have my hair done. I just answered, "Short".

Before the cut. That's Steven behind me.

Wash up before Steven lays his finishing touch on me

After my hair cut was done, Steve is still half way washing TheNurse's hair. Now I know why they charge more for girl's hair.

The new and refreshing look

I don't like having long hair. Once the side of my hair touch my ears, I'll go for a hair cut because it makes my ears itchy with the hair touching them. After waiting for another 1 hour more, alas TheNurse's hair is done.

In the dark

Let's there be light

My hairstyle whenever or wherever I cut it will almost be the same style. The only different is the price to cut it. TheNurse told me that it's comfortable having Steve washing her hair, and he blew her curled hair so nice and pretty. She's coming back to have her hair cut and style. Nice right her hair after the wash + blow.

The cost:

Male - Wash + Cut = RM 20

Female - Wash + Blow (Curl) ~ RM 25 (Varies on lenght)

This one salon that charge quite a reasonable price for such a good service. Will definitely come back here again next time. Actually The Cut previously is known as The Dry Cut. They have a few outlets in Klang Valley.
