Menya Musashi (麺屋武蔵), 1 Utama

I've been reading rave review about the ramen in Menya Musashi, 1 Utama. It's quite new and it's inside the 2nd floor of Isetan, 1 Utama. This floor houses many other Japanese eateries from sushi, ramen, Japanese cuisine, Korean BBQ and also Puran Bi (Plan B).

I came here around 5.30 p.m. which is a bit early for dinner because I don't want to have to queue up when this place is usually packed during dinner hours. I chose to set by the open kitchen where I can see the action going on while the staffs were dishing out the ramen. It was quite fun watching them work.

Musashi is actually the name of a legendary swordsman in Japan during the Shogun era. He was very skilled in kendo and almost no one has defeated him before. So, to put his name in the menya (noodle house), it must mean that the ramen here is unbeatable.

I ordered the Kuro Musashi Ramen, one of the 3 unique soup base from Menya Musashi. For this black soup base, it is consist of black-fried shallots with garlic. The other two are Shiroi Musashi and Akai Musashi. They gave a very generous amount of chashu (braised pork belly) that is very balance in term of the meat and fat ratio. Yums. Of course, nowadays every ramen shop will have the marinated soft-boiled egg, which is cooked to perfection. As expected, the soup here is not very salty as in Santouka, which is a Hokkaido style ramen. The noodle is very springy. I will say, their ramen got my approval as one of the best in Klang Valley.

As always when I eats at a ramen shop, I'll order their gyoza to gauge their quality. This is like ordering fries in McDonald's to gauge the standard of their outlet. The gyoza was not too bad but also nothing to shout about.

I think one the secret why their noodle is so springy might be the way the rinse the noodle before they serve it. Watch the video below to see how it was done. =P

Forgive me for the picture quality because it was spur of the moment that I went here to eat, hence picture was taken with my Nokia E7, which has the worse phone camera I've every seen. =P

I happened to bumped into Ying Zi's post about Menya Musashi in Raffles City, Singapore. She took video of how they cook the noodle from inside the kitchen. Click here to find out more.

Super Bad Experience Watching Movie at GSC 1 Utama

I'm not sure about you but from my past experience, I always had some of my movie going experience spoiled by bad projection or bad sound. So often than not it happens in GSC 1 Utama. Okay, having technical glitch is one thing but having the projection going way out and the audiences themselves have to notify the staff there to tell them there's a problem with the picture after waiting for 10 or 15 minutes means one thing. The projectionist must be doing something else rather than making sure that the movie is projected correctly or the sound is okay after he push the start button.

Take just now for example. I went to watch Viral Factor in GSC 1 Utama on 21st Jan 2012, 9pm at hall 11. I was quite excited to watch this movie that was shot mostly in Malaysia. When the film starts, the ratio of the picture doesn't match the screen at all. It's like it's using 4:3 rather than the 16:9 ratio. Then there's the sound having some distortion that is very irritating and the volume from dialogue and sound effect in the movie was damn low. We, the audiences had to endured this bad quality projection for about 15 minutes, until some of the audiences couldn't take it anymore and walked out to complain. Then only a few minutes later the picture ratio was corrected and a few more minutes later the sound was corrected.

What I don't understand was, why we the audience need to wait 10 to 15 minutes and go make a complain only then the technical glitch is taken care of? What is the projectionist doing? I hope he/she is not sleeping on the job.

Viral Factor is quite nice by the way but please watch it somewhere else if you don't want a bad experience like me. I also bought ticket for I Love Hong Kong 2012 for 12.30 am show at hall 6. Ratio and sound was okay but there's a big vertical line covering the top of the picture. I didn't wait for 10 minutes this time, after 1 or 2 minutes into the movie, I walked out and complained to the staff. They then tried to fixed it. They stopped the movie, do something, then played again but the vertical black line was still there. The frustrating thing is that the movie is continued to be played, so we all missed out portions of the story not to mention watching the movie with the black vertical line. After 15 minutes and it's still not fixed yet. I couldn't take it anymore. I walked out straight to the box office and asked for a refund. The box office staff asked why. I told him technical glitch and I missed like 10 minutes of the story. He gave me the RM12 I paid and I left 1 Utama.

This is what I get when I pay good money to support original film? Luckily I don't watch movie at GSC 1 Utama that often. TGV Kepong is still the best lol. Please, GSC Cinemas ask your projectionists not to sleep on the job. Thank you very much.

Delicious Cafe + Penny Tai, 1 Utama New Wing

Last Saturday I went to 1 Utama to buy ticket for the T.Music Festival, and I then went to watch Murderer. I read from review that there's similarity in Murderer and The Orphan. My guess is that the little girl in The Orphan is actually not a little girl too :p

It is almost 4.30 p.m. after the movie and I feel a bit hungry. So off I went in search of a place to eat. As I've plan to go to Penny Tai's autograph session near the main entrance of the new wing, so Delicious is a fairly good choice because it's located inside Ms. Read and just next to the main entrance.

This is the second time that I am dining in Delicious. The first time is a very long time ago. For drink, I ordered Thai Cooler. Which is soda with lychee and lemongrass. I don't know why they give me the extra syrup because there's really no need for it, the Thai Cooler is sweet enough without additional syrup. It taste very refreshing. One of my recommended drink to order.

Thai Cooler

I don't want to have a heavy meal so I just order a soup and a salad. The soup, which I ordered is French Onion Soup. It's been quite awhile I didn't drink a French Onion Soup. I like the way they put the grilled cheese on top of a bread and on top of the soup. Unlike some other restaurant which will put the cheese in the soup and melted in it, makes the soup very salty. I like the onion soup that is not very salty here. Just taste right. The grilled cheese is grilled very nicely too, just the right crunchiness and chewiness.

Rating: 4/5

Where's the soup?

Ah, there it is.

For the salad, I had lettuce with avocado, chicken, and cranberries salad (the name of the salad is to long for me to remember, it's Cos Lettuces something something). I have a soft spot for avocado, if there's no other dish I like to try, avocado dish is the defacto dish that I'll choose if it's one of the ingredient or condiment. The salad dressing used is usual that one can find in Caesars Salad. The lettuce is very fresh and crunchy. I can do with more avocado though, I was only able to find only 3 or 4 dices of avocado. The diced chicken breast is a bit too dry, difficult to swallow. The lettuces, avocado and cranberries saves the day.

Rating: 3/5

Les Salade

Well, there's still a lot of dishes to try in Delicious. Most probably will try the Duck Confit on my next visit.

I was there in Delicious until about 6.30 p.m. only then I move to the outside of the main entrance for the Penny Tai autographing session. Of course, she's not there yet. 988 DJ May 子 and DJ Hau Min were the MC of the event. This is DJ Hau Min's first time hosting an event in the outdoor.

They played games with the fans and the prize is a poster of Penny. Only at around 7.30 p.m. that Penny showed up. It's been two years since her last album. Here's a video of her singing "兩難" one of her latest song from her new album "原諒我就是這樣的女生".

After a few more songs and poster flying, it's time for the autograph session to start.

I bought her newest CD there, the price is lower than what is selling in the CD shop. RM 40 only. Of course, I was able to get her autograph. This is her second autograph I got, the first one is way back about 10 years ago with her debut album. It was held in the entrance of Star Hill. I went up stage to sing Rasa Sayang with pantun too.

Penny Tai is still so friendly as when I met her in her first autograph session in KL.

Paru Goreng at Teh Tarik Place, 1 Utama

Simon Says: I foresee a 5th By-election is coming. Elizabeth Wong might resign as the State Assemblywoman for Bukit Lanjan. When long will all this By-election shit stop?

Walking around 1 Utama and I have a sudden pang for a glass of teh halia and light snacks. There it was, Teh Tarik Place in a quiet and cosy corner near the entrance to Rain Forest the same floor as Kluang Station which is doing quite a brisk business despite their mediocre food. Opposite 港士港啡 which is quite contrast, while one is serving Hong Kong style 奶茶, the other is serving teh tarik. You can really find it all in 1 Utama it seems.

After ordering my teh halia, I am looking at the menu thinking of what to eat. Nasi lemak will be to heavy because it's just tea time for me, I still have to go to Pavilion for dinner. Then it caught my eyes. Paru goreng - RM 2. So there I put my order to the waiter. He re-confirmed with me, "Paru goreng saja?". "Ya, paru saja", I replied.

Paru Goreng (I got 4 pieces for RM 2)

Not that crunchy because it's not freshly fried for you. Nevertheless the texture of the cow lung is still there. Also the indescribable nice taste that one find the lung. Those that scurried away on hearing the word lung will not know what they are missing here. I will gladly exchange my glass of teh halia for a glass of cold Hoegaarden White to with the paru goreng.

2008 New Year's Eve in 1 Utama

In my previous post, I wrote that I might be celebrating New Year Countdown alone in 1 Utama. Well, that's half true actually. I had dinner alone in Dave's Pizza & Vino, it's the last day to try out the Guinness Infused Meal promotion. Will post about it later.

After working from 8pm 30th Dec 2008 till 8am 31st Dec 2008, I went home and slept until 5 pm. Then I drove to 1 Utama to do some banking in HSBC Amanah and dropped by to visit 988 DJs that is doing live broadcasting in Studio V that Cindy blogged about here and here.

They're On Air.

DJ Sam happened to be there too to prepare to be the MC for the countdown party later that night in 1 Utama. I of course, took a picture with her. She's one of the DJ for 988 Hello Morning show, which starts from 6 am to 10 am every Mon to Fri.

DJ Sam of 988

Then DJ Luke took a commercial break from his On Air show K6 Clan. When he's going back to the studio, I manage to ask him for a picture. He's very friendly in person.

With DJ Luke

He later invited me to sit inside the studio while he's interviewing Master Kenny Hoo of Good Feng Shui Geomantic Research. Master Kenny is giving his bazi readings on the birth date sent in by the listener earlier.

DJ Luke also briefly interview me On Air, asking me my name and my new year resolution. LOL. My 15 seconds of fame on local Chinese radio.

Master Kenny, me, and DJ Luke.

Then it's almost time for DJ Anson to take over the time slot. I managed to get him to sign on the 988 2009 CNY album. He's one of the DJ for Hello Morning too.

DJ Anson

Also asked DJ Morna to sign on the CD and of course took a picture with her. She host the Weekend Queen show on Saturday.

DJ Morna

It's a very comfortable place to do broadcast.

There's a countdown party in 1 Utama, and Justin Lo (側田) will be performing. Thanks to Charlie, who is working in Digi, we managed to get a good spot in the Yellow Zone. The party is main sponsor is non other than Digi.

Charlie not working but still wearing his employee tag.

Part of the crowd in front of us.

The DJ from 988, DJ Sam, and DJ Luke were the MC and also a DJ from Red.FM. The DJs from 988 also perform two songs from the CNY album, additional to Sam and Luke were Xin Yi, Morna, Anson, and Nick. I took picture with Xin Yi and Nick before in the Yeah! Award Celebration Dinner.

Most of the picture I took didn't turn out well. Here's one of Casey Tse, even though she's from Hong Kong, her debut album is a full Malaysian production.

Casey Tse (謝文雅)

I took a short clip of her performing her new song Fly from her debut album "I am Casey". One of her ballad "学了好久 AKU CINTA PADAMU" is very nice too.

After Casey's performance, it's time to countdown. The fireworks in 1 Utama is programmed to goes off according to the music that goes with it. The fireworks is so damn near that that I felt like the earth is shaking. It's one of the nicest fireworks I've ever seen. Even Justin (側田) said that.

After the countdown, it's time for Justin to perform. He sang songs like "Stuck On Up", "命硬", "決戰二世祖", "情歌", and 2 new songs from his latest album, "三十日" and "未輸". Due to the audiences encouragement he briefly sang two more song "Kong" and "好人" without music.

Stuck On You

決戰二世祖

DJ Sam ask for encore

After the performance ends I manage to take picture with 988 DJ cum Chief Program Director, DJ Tock Ping (林淑萍), now she only host the "Logon 1001" every Thursday night.

淑萍 jeh, the boss of all the DJs in 988

The traffic is too damn congested to take my car which I parked in 1 Utama. So, Charlie and I walked to his car, which he parked in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail and we went to a nasi kandar restaurant nearby to have supper.

My chapati with daging cincang.

Charlie eating with two forks because the spoons is being washed.

Last but not least. All the best to you all in the Year 2009. Ah, Chinese New Year coming soon. Ang pao, ang pao mari.

Simon Says wishes you all a great year in 2009.

Otak-otak Place, 1 Utama New Wing

The time twisted, and suddenly I was brought back to 1991. I was only in primary 6 back then. I walk around, the place look familiar yet so new to me. Ah, Tora and Ding Dang, junk food that I used to buy, not for the snack but for the toy that comes with it.

Suddenly feeling exhausted, I took a sit and suddenly man that look like my primary school headmaster asked a teacher to hand me an exercise book. What? It's been so many years I did not do homework on an exercise book.

What is this? I didn't remember that I went to a school call Otak-otak Place in primary. I studied in a school for Monkey Boys. I must be dreaming. So I flipped open the exercise book. Surprise, surprise. There's no home work to do but there's word to read. There's 16 different exam questions made up from the word "otak-otak". How cool is that. You might get A+ too for that.

The teacher ask me to choose one, so I chose Steamed Fish Otak-otak. "Sorry, many pupils had taken that so there's no more left", the teacher told me. Maybe it's because I was brought back to slightly after the masa berehat (recess time), the time on my watch is about 5 p.m. Left with only Steamed Squid Otak-otak and so be it.

I flipped the exercise book and discovered that this school is more than otak-otak. There's also Nasi Ayam Percik, Hainan Chicken Rice, Nasi Briyani Dam and etc. I remember that a fellow classmate of mine told me that the Nasi Briyani Dam is sure winner to score A. So, I chose that.

Before I starts to tackle the exam questions, I start to read the Ice Kopi to satisfy my thirst for knowledge. This must be a dream, why am I reading the Ice Kopi?

Steamed Squid Otak-otak (RM 3.90)

The first question is Steamed Squid Otak-otak. Hm... so creamy and the squid is still springy. It literally melts in my mouth. I must be going crazy, I am eating my exam question but it's just too hard to resist the temptation. I think if I have arrive earlier and take the Steamed Fish Otak-otak, I'll score better but nevertheless it still passed with flying colour.

Score: A-

Nasi Briyani Dam (RM 12.90)

The next question, looks like a multiple choice question that comes with a vegetable green curry, nasi briyani, papadam and a hidden trick question - chicken rendang. I had to dig deep to find the hidden trick question. So tricky the headmaster.

The green curry is not spicy at all, so it's easy for everyone. The nasi briyani is al dente, with the right type of rice, and spices thrown in. Just a bit dissapointed that the portion is not much. I'm a big taker. Chicken rendang is good but maybe the environment there is too cold or I just took a longer time to think about the answer that the chicken rendang is not warm anymore.

Score: A-

Hidden trick question.

"You can grow up and be a doctor if you study hard Seow, just like Dickie Dose", says the teacher. Huh? He looks more like a character from the card game I used to play, apa nama "Happy Family" if not mistaken.

Looking around while I was waiting for my exam result. I saw a fan that I think dated back to my grandfather's time. It's cold enough already so it's not turn on.

There were other pupils that still taking their exam.

After settling my exam score, I was suddenly back in the present. It's not a dream but a place that bring back memories when I was just a primary student. Ah, so nostalgic. That's Otak-otak Place. Still a lot more different questions dishes to explore. Will surely come back to take on the Steamed Fish Otak-otak.

Address:

For people that still wondering where Otak-otak Place is located at. It's at the new shops taking over the now defunct Giant.

I might be the first one.
