Grasso Coffee

On the way to my sister's place, we took the MRT from Changi to Simei. We need to take a bus from Simei in order to reach my sister place. While my sister went to fetch my niece and nephew from their kindergarten, she bought me a latte from Grasso Coffee and asked me to wait there.

Grasso Coffee is your local coffee shop with a twist. They serve your local Nanyang kopi and gourmet coffee. I asked one of the co-owner are they using Italian coffee bean for my latte (because Grasso is an Italian name), he told me that their coffee bean is from Australia which is milder than Italian to cater for the local taste bud.

True enough, once I took sip of my latte it's not as bitter as the coffee I made in my office, which uses Segafredo coffee bean. Grasso is mostly cater for on-the-go customers, there's only one table there or you can choose to sit at the counter. Pricing wise is quite affordable. My latte cost SGD$3.30 (about Starbucks' tall size).

Grasso is your friendly neighborhood cafe, student gets 10% discount and they are very friendly and know most of their customers.

There's light snack available too, very good for those that needs a quick lunch or light tea time. My niece seems to like their Ham and Cheese Crossaint very much.

Old school on one side.

Modern coffee machine on the other.

According to the co-owner, Anthony, what's the meaning of Grasso. He told me that it means fat man in Italian and the logo is based on one of his partner that is a quite stout.

To help lessen the stress on the environment, customer is encouraged to reuse the paper sleeve by giving rebate on the next coffee if the same sleeve is reused.

If you happened to be at Eastpoint Mall, then you can come a try out the coffee from Grasso which is just in the row of  shops next to the mall. I will say that it taste as good as Starbucks if not better.

Kapal Api Coffee Party

I was invited in Facebook by Michelle to Kapal Api Coffee Party a few weeks back. I didn't really see the event until I got a call from Helen that Michelle insists that I come for the party. Since I have time to kill on a Saturday afternoon, so off I went to Nikonian Academy in The Strands, Kota Damansara.

The party is to introduce us the 3-in-1 Kopi Kapal Api, which is a very big brand from Indonesia. After watching the coporate introduciton of the Kapal Api Group, only then I know how big is the corporation behind Kapal Api coffee. Their business ranged from manufacturing coffee, coffee bean plantation, kopi luwak, cafes, candies, pastries and even coffee making machines.

To be honest, 3-in-1 coffee is not my kind of coffee because I found it too sweet but Kapal Api coffee flavour is robust and quite aromatic. It's not very sweet too. Nowadays I like to drink coffee without any sweetener, will like it very much if the distributor will bring in some of their coffee bean or even better, bring in their cafe franchise. Then I can have a taste of their latte or maybe kopi luwak.

Andrew having a discussion with Kapal Api local distributor's Managing Director.

After the party, it's time for the real show to begin. It's the auditioning for Kapten Kapal Api, the ambassador for Kapal Api Coffee. The chosen one will be doing promoting jobs and also to host a series of web-pisode of Kapal Api Coffee. I stayed back and 'kaypoh' a bit of how an audition for a web series host will be like.

Camera test being done on the Kapten Kapal Api's assistants.

Andrew showing the hopefuls how to be a host.
Besides getting paid while doing the ambassador related jobs, as a bonus after the end of the 1 year ambassador stint, the chosen one get to go for fully paid Bali trip.

After all that setting up, finally it's time to start rolling. As it turn out, the audition will be the 1st web-pisode of the series and Andrew will be the host.

The managing director and the marketing manager of Kapal Api distributor were the judges. Andrew is one of the judges too.

Waiting for their turn for the screen test. There really isn't a limit of age or sex. So, there's a good mixed of young and old, male and female.

And the audition begin. The first two did quite well and the third one not too bad too but spoke a little bit too hasty. I left after the third because I need to go home for a nap to be ready for this.

If you want to find out who was the chosen one, then like Kapal Api KAW Facebook page. You can also find out how KAW is the coffee. I think my uncle likes it, he already finished the packet that I brought home.

Austin Chase Coffee, The Gardens

I bought a Groupon voucher for 50% discount on a cup of regular hot or cold coffee from Austin Chase. The reason I bought is because I haven't tried Austin Chase before and I read that they sells mille crepe made by Humble Beginnings.

So, last week I went to the Austin Chase outlet at the Gardens. Ordered my latte and to my dissapointed there is no mille crepe available on that day. Also, I was surprised that I was given a paper instead of the ceramic cup. I was planning ot have the coffee in the outlet, not take away.

Only after I sat down and look around that I realised that Austin Chase is not a self service cafe like Starbucks, Coffee Bean or San Francisco Coffee. Noob me *smack forehead*. I noticed that during lunch time there were quite a few attractive ladies have lunch there. They were either alone or with another lady friend.

Their latte is quite standard and almost comparable to Starbucks. If you like a heavier coffee taste, then you should order a double shot. I know that Starbucks will not charge extra if you asked for double shot on a tall latte.

It's sad that I didn't have the chance to try the mille crepe. Oh well, I still have another Groupon voucher on the Austin Chase ice-blended drinks. So, I'll come again next time and hopefully there will be mille crepe available.

Bad Ass Coffee, Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya

I rarely goes to Tropicana City Mall because it's not too convenient to go there from my place. It's not far, it's just that to entrance to TCM is limited from one road which is a road I rarely takes if I want to go to SS2. So, last Thursday when WMW wanted to meet up in TCM, I gladly accepted because this might be the 2nd time that I'll be coming here for the whole 2010.

Since, Bad Ass Coffee is only found here in TCM, I opted to come and have a taste of their kona coffee and oxtail soup. I ordered iced latte and hey it's tasted nice. Not diluted like the iced latte from Starbucks (I always ask for extra shot on my tall iced latte, it's free). It won't be watered down even if the ice melts.

Because the ice cubes are made of coffee too. Now that's an idea Starbucks should learn from.

Coffee Ice Cubes

The food here is way better than Starbucks. I don't think there's any coffee chain in Malaysia that serves Oxtail Soup (RM 9.90++) except for Bad Ass Coffee. For that price, you'll get three slices of garlic bread and two big chunks of oxtail meat. Quite a value for a coffee chain. It tasted very nice too.

Now I hope that it will opens more outlets so that we don't have to drink diluted coffee anymore.
