Causeway Bay Spicy Crab, Desa Sri Hartamas

I've been reading a lot of rave reviews about Causeway Bay Spicy Crab restaurant in Desa Sri Hartamas which serves up the popular Typhoon Shelter “Bei Fung Thong” Crab (正宗避风塘辣蟹). Back in the 70s this dish is sold on a boat in the Typhoon Shelter in Hong Kong. Customers will have to ride a boat to eat the dish.

A few years ago the boat shifted to a shops on the land. If you happens to be in Hong Kong, you might want to drop by to (喜記避風塘炒辣蟹 Hee Kee Fried Crab Expert Ltd) at Shop 1 - 4 G/F 379-389 Jaffe Road, Wanchai,Hong kong or Shop A2-A3 G/F Lockhart House 441 Lockhart Road,Causeway Bay,Hong kong. To have the taste of the authentic HK Garlic & Chili Crab.

Well, as for us, we can go to the one in Desa Sri Hartamas said to be authentic. So, I recommended this restaurant when my colleagues decided to have dinner together. At first I wanted to try their crab porridge but once we heard that the market price for one crab that night is RM 80, we changed it to 干瑶蛋白炒饭 Fried Rice with Egg White and Dried Scallops (RM 28 for mid portion).

The fried rice is friend al dente. Not too dry nor too wet. The egg whites just nicely moist the rice and not overcooked. The taste is just right not too salty as in some fried rice I've tasted before. The prawn not overcooked too, I think the prawn is only put in when the fire is switch off. One of the nicer fried rice I've ever tasted before. I recommend this if you come here to dine.

We ordered two crabs. One is steamed and the other of course is the HK Garlic & Chili Crab. The crab is quite big but it cost RM 80 which we found is a bit too expensive for our liking. The steamed crab is nothing to shout about, a lot of Chinese wine was used. The steamed eggs is overcooked. I think I can find better steamed crab for cheaper the price in Tak Fok, Aman Puri.

Then came the much raved 正宗避风塘辣蟹 HK Garlic & Chili Crab. While my colleagues found that the garlic to be very spicy. I just felt a hint of spiciness. The fried garlic is quite nice and there's load of it. We ended up eating the garlic to fill our stomach because we can't afford to order anymore dish. For RM 80 per crab, I don't think it's really worth it. I might as well add more money to have Shanghai Hairy Crab in October.

Maybe I'll wait till the price dropped to RM 50 per crab lol. Next year when I go to Hong Kong, I will surely go to 喜記避風塘炒辣蟹 Hee Kee Fried Crab Expert and try the real thing. Yes. Hee Kee is the from the original owner that started doing this dish back in the 70s. It is now run by his daughter, I think.

Well, at least there's a complementary herbal jelly at the end. But it tasted bland.

It seems a lot of celebrities eaten here before. From my experience, seeing pictures of celebrities pasted on the wall of a eatery doesn't always mean that the food there is good.

There, three dishes and a pot of tea and it cost us RM 215.60 (including 10% service charge). Eating here once in a blue moon is okay but not a frequent outing for us salaried workers. I might come back for the 干瑶蛋白炒饭 Fried Rice with Egg White and Dried Scallops though. Yes, I won't order any crab.

we had to return our crab dish to the kitchen because the crab legs are chopped to tiny pieces and the portion (if piece together)seems lesser than a whole crab??

Had the white egg and scallops fried rice. Absolutely disgusting. This restaurant is an absolute con. 18 bucks wasted. And the supervisor was very stubborn. Would not let me talk to the chef. I ordered take out and there were pieces of plastic in my rice, and holes in the container cover. Never again!
