One Step Closer to the Maxis Om Nom Nom Race

A race about food? Now now, that is enough reason for me to take part in the race. I love food. Almost 50% of my posts are about food. I did food crawling with my foodies friends before eating nice food from one destination to another. Don't believe me? Read about my Kepong Food crawl here and Sri Sentosa/OUG Food Crawl here.

My knowledge about food and eateries are quite well. This Maxis Om Nom Nom Race is like a race designed for me to take part in, so it will be a lost if I don't take part in it. I am also a Maxis Evangelist. Not to mention there are a lot of great prizes to be won.

1st Prize: A trip to Hong Kong 3 days 2 nights with 5-star accommodation (for the winning team members of 4 pax) worth RM10,000, and also 4x HTC Desire Z (1 per winning member)
2nd Prize: 4 x HTC 7 Mozart (1 per winning member)

Just by participating, I'll get a Maxis goodies bag. Muahaha.

Maxis Om Nom Nom Race

By the way, check out the Maxis Broadband plan. It's good for those that needs Internet on the move for your laptop, netbook or tablet. Click here for more detail.

I think it will be an advantage for me to win the race if I have Maxis Finder301 Application. This location-based app provides you with information on food, restaurants, ATMs, banks, clinics, police stations and more around you. Find out more about Maxis Finder301 here.

Kin Shui Tei, Tropicana Golf & Country Club

Having good food is one of the best thing that I like to do, and having good food with friends and cronies (in food lah) is the best of the best. Another foodies meet up, this time it's on some high end Japanese food. Welcome to Kin Shui Tei in Tropicana Golf & Country Club. I'm not sure whether it's a coincident or KampungBoyCityGal like to organize food review session in clubs lol. Remember Phai Lin?

Kin Shui Tei is owned by the same company that runs Dessert's Bar and Nagomi Shabu-shabu. The foodies that we'll be having dinner with are Chris and Christine that were back from Glasgow, Ai Wei, Swee San, Lex & Weizhi, and yours truly. This is the first time meeting Christine and Ai Wei even though I've followed their blogs for quite some time now. It's like meeting a long lost friend wtf.

We were served edamame as appetizer. Yummy. Lex and I very fast walloped the whole plate :p

The first thing that caught my eyes in Kin Shui Tei is the menu. It's very big and quite heavy. When asked about this, the director of Kin Shui Tei told us that it was designed so that it can't be easily stolen. LOL. Sigh, what has it comes to this world that people steals menu. Well, I know some competitor might do it once in a while.

The menu length is from my head till my chest.

After placing our orders, we were then given a tour around the place.

VIP dining room.

Wafu style dining room.

There are also a few smaller wafu style dining room. You'll have to take of your shoes.

Teppanyaki Kitchen

Sushi and sashimi bar.

They also have variety of sake, wine and even champagne. After the tour, we've gotten very hungry. Let's start eating.

Swee San's tofu salad arrive first. She is very nice to let us taste a bit of it. I find it to be very refreshing indeed and very healthy too. Those whom is on a diet can try this.

Rating: 3.5/5

Tofu Salada

KBCG and I decided to shared a pot of uni tofu (sea urchin and tofu). This is like uni and tofu stew that is more towards the soupy side. A few slices of freshly imported sea urchin lies on soft tofu and shredded Japanese seawed. OMG! This dish is very good. I only can have one Chinese word to described this, "鲜", it's so damn fish and goat. We were reluctant to share this with the others but alas good food must be shared only then it'll be tastier :p This dish is on top of my recommended choice of dish to order here.

Rating: 5/5

Uni Tofu

I decided to order a salad myself too. RM 9 for an Onion Salada. The most value salad in the menu lol. While most of you thinks that onion salad must be very hard to swallow because raw onion can make the throats burn sometime. But not this onion here, it's not spicy at all but also have a bit of natural sweetness to it. Mixed it up with the onsen tamago, and voila a very refreshingly good appetizer.

Rating: 4/5

Christine had Unagi Sashimi set. She let us try the sashimi and I took a piece of maguro (tuna). Fresh!

Someone ordered Salmon Salada. Look at how fresh the salmon is. This is because some 80% of the ingredients are freshly flew in from Japan twice a week.

Weizhi had Salmon Porridge. Yes, I try a bit of it too. It is nice, not very salty like some that I've tried before. A good choice if you're looking for something that is not too heavy.

Rating: 4/5

Ai Wei whom doesn't eat beef ordered Chicken Sukiyaki Set instead of the normal beef that is found in sukiyaki. I had a piece of the chicken, not bad.

I forgot who had Ten Don (天丼) :p (No, it's not tendon, an anatomy of a cow)

I also ordered a plate of Fried Kaki (fried oyster). Oh my, it's crunchy outside and juicy inside. The oyster is very fresh too. Felt like it just came from the sea. Oh, Weizhi like the side salad very much. Of course I shared it with the all the people there, even though it's so addictive.

Rating: 4/5

For main, I ordered their monthly special, Stone Grilled Tuna. Well, the teriyaki sauce is a tad to sweet for my liking and I think the tuna is overcook due to photography by very one. So, this is a disadvantage when you ordered food that need to be cook at the right done-ness in a group food orgy. So, it really don't do justice to the rating. But the sauce is really quite sweet.

Rating: 2.5/5

I should've ordered Lex's Seafood Teppanyaki set. I tried a piece of his teppanyaki prawn, and I was deported back into the past when I first visited Tanjung Tualang and ate the fresh river prawn there. The prawn is so damn springy lor. Eat it together with the house made mayounaise, oh my god, instant orgasm. Another highly recommended dish from me.

Rating: 5/5

Salmon Steak is fresh but it's quite normal.

I didn't get the name of this dish below. Grilled Cod Fish in Pumpkin Sauce? :P

It's not the end of the run down after we finished our meals.

We were one happy bunch.

The sushi chef of Kin Shui Tei later show us of to cut a tai (snapper) and turn it into sushi. Also the teppanyaki chef show us how to flip a bowl with fried rice inside it with out dropping the rice. All this will be up in my next post with the videos that I took of the demonstration.

After de-boning the tai, sliced it into thin slices.

Tai in thin slices.

Voila, Tai Nigiri Sushi.

Chef Ikuo Tanabe, the Master Chef of Kin Shui Tei.

Last but not least, we were treated with Macha Tiramisu (Green Tea Tiramisu). Remember, it shouldn't be sourish, if it is, please inform the staff and they'll change it for you.

Kin Shui Tei is one Japanese restaurant that I'll recommend to friend that need to bring important client to, anniversary dinner, or any important celebration. To be honest, the price here is a bit on the upper level but the freshness and the effort put in by the chef and staff makes every penny worth. For me, once in while of splurging for good food is a kind of reward to oneself.

Lex said I look like Air Asia wtf.

Kepong Food Crawl

Simon Says: It's the first week of the month again. This means Time Out KL: Comedy Thursday Night is on the 5th of Feb 2009. Remember to get your discount voucher here.

This happened about a month ago. Yes, I was busy. I remember that I was going to take a short nap at about 8 p.m. I checked my mobile and saw a missed call from WMW. I called her and she asked me whether I know about Sen Kee Satay in Taman Desa Jaya. I don't quite know the name Taman Desa Jaya but I know there's an area we call Desa Jaya in between Kepong and Selayang. She then asked whether I am intrested in a food crawl in Kepong. I of course said yes. Even though I have limited money in my wallet lol.

So, I drove to Carrefour Kepong where WMW is waiting for me. Took me 20 minutes, normally only 5 minutes from my place. It was a Saturday so there's many people shopping. Once I get on WMW's car, I was greeted by a very hungry CityGal. Then Jason show me a street directory which is almost 5 year old. Metro Prima was not even there yet. -_- Once he pointed out our destination, I already know where's the place is at. So, I navigated them to Taman Desa Jaya. You can read how it all begin here.

First stop, Seng Kee Duck Satay. I've been living near Kepong for more than 20 years and I don't know about this place. What a shame.

They used to sell pork satay too but now it's replaced with lamb.

We ordered 10 sticks of satay for each of us, which is 40 sticks. CityGal tapao another 10 for KampungBoy and WMW also tapao another 20 sticks.

The staffs diligently preparing our duck satay.

The satay sauce is very creamy and peanut-ty.

Alas, the yummy duck satay with the side dishes of onion and cucumber. The texture of the duck meat is harder than chicken but softer than lamb. It doesn't have the gamey taste that duck has. It doesn't taste like roast duck, it's more like a kebab. At first, I only planned to have 5 sticks due to budget constraint but alas I can't deny such a temptalicious affair. I had 10 sticks instead.

Next stop, I recommended Gou Lou Chao Fun (Tall Man Fried Noodle) that I tasted a few years ago, which I think is not too bad. I warned them that we might have to wait very long though. Located along Jalan Kepong Besar, this restaurant has been serving the residents of Kepong for almost more than 25 years.

The restaurant is called Seng Yuen but the locals call it Gou Lou Chao Fun.

The noodles are cooked by this uncle alone, hence the long wait.

I ordered Hokkien Char (hor fun and mee, some might think it's weird but this is how I like it), Cantonese fried Ying Yong, and Loh Mee.

Hokkien Cha

After an hour long wait, our noodles finally arrived. Not sure whether it's because there's too many customers hence a drop in the quality. As, WMW put it, there's not enough wok hei and the lack of pork lark.

The Cantonese Fried Ying Yong tasted quite bland but WMW say it's ok for her. Maybe, I'm more towards the heavy tasting side lol.

Cantonese Fried Ying Yong

Sigh. Quite disappointing. It's not what I've tasted before. The disappointment doesn't stop there. The Loh Mee I ordered turned into Yee Mee instead. -__-

Afraid of waiting for another hour, we gladly took the Yee Mee. Not too bad the Yee Mee but it's never my plate of noodle.

Overall Rating: 3/5

Mun Yee Mee

Our disappointment ends when the pork lard that we ordered arrived at our table. Pork lard saves the day. Woot!

Trust me, it's not enough for the four of us.

It's almost 12 midnight when we reached our last stop for dessert. We passed by Tim Pun Gor Gor when we started our journey from Carrefour. Since my car parked in Carrefour, we make it out last stop of the night.

Since I only left RM 3 in my wallet, so I ordered one of the cheapest dessert sold here. Almond Sweet Soup + Red Bean + lotus seeds, RM 3 for a small bowl. It's a quite interesting mix. Never did I know that almond can taste so well with red bean. Yummy and fulfilling.

Rating: 3.75/5

Sweet Soup + Red Bean + lotus seeds

CityGal ordered Black Sesame sweet soup + Almond sweet soup, RM 3 for small bowl. Hence the colours are black and white. Read her review here.

Black Sesame sweet soup + Almond sweet soup

Jason and WMW shared on of the most expensive yet nicest dessert here. The mango with noodles (RM 7.50). The noodles is actually coconut jelly shaped like hor fun (rice noodle). The 'noodles' are really refreshing and smooth. Blended very well with the mango. Next time will come back to eat one bowl.

Rating: 4/5

Mango with noodles.

Why is CityGal laughing?

Well, the staff there speak some very Hong Kong style Cantonese. The waiter told us that they need to 'ta yong' (means closing time) instead of 'san moon'. WMW which is not very well verse in traditional way of speaking don't get he waiter, hence created a very funny scene.

And we end the night of food crawl in Kepong here. Ah, such fun going on food crawl with fellow foodies. It's been a long while that I haven't done that. I wasn't even a blogger yet in my first food crawl. Total damage for the night is RM 15. Not too bad. That's all I have in my wallet lol.

Me & Jackson's Birthday Gathering @ Pick N' Brew

Simon Says: Happy Birthday to Kelly and Evolna. Wish both of you have a great day.

Two days before my birthday (17th August), I shamelessly organized a small gathering to celebrate my birthday and Jackson's birthday with the foodies in Pick N' Brew. There's two reasons for choosing Pick N' Brew, first is of cost it serves great tasting food, and second is because Jackson is always busy and can't get out from Pick N' Brew. If he can't go out for gathering then the the gathering come to him instead lol.

FBB was the earliest to arrived due to some miscommunication. I arrived after watching Lee Chong Wei won the semi-final for Olympic badminton men single in the center court of 1 Utama New Wing. FBB went out to walk around and only Jackson was there. Had some small takl with him while he's busy on his laptop. The talk is about business too wtf. Not long after that FBB came back. This is the first time meeting him in person after following his blog for so long. We decided to order something to eat first while waiting for the others to come.

FBB ordered assorted bruschetta. He thinks that the bread is a bit too think. I think so too because I have a hard time putting the whole thing in my mouth lol. The taste is good though.

Rating: 3.5/5

Jackson reserved a table for us.

Teckiee reached half an hour later and brought some snacks for us. Which look and taste like mini dorayaki but is not dorayaki. It comes with red bean and custard fillings. Yummy.

Red bean.

Custard.

We asked Teckiee to give a call to CityGal, and found out that she can't make it because she was stuck in a jam in SS2. Last but not least Jason is the last of the confirmed guest to arrive.

Jason arriving in style.

A picture with Jackson while waiting.

Jackson is so nice that he open a bottle of red wine on him. It's a good choice too.

Jackson ordered Lamb Moussaka. This is what I had the first time I visit Pick N' Brew. Still maintaining the quality and taste here.

I had Nasi Kerabu which came with a fried chicken on satay sauce. Marvelous combination there. The only thing I'm curious is why the nasi kerabu is not blue in colour.

Rating: 3.5/5

Next up, Teckiee's Lamb Tikka.

Jason's Chicken Cordon Bleu. I think I'll try this one on the next visit.

FBB's Snaper Crusted with Oats & Muesli. I like the texture of the oats, muesli and the snapper. Slurp, slurp.

This is me taking Teckiee's camera taking Jason's camera taking picture of food. LOL.

As promised, FBB baked his famous Durian Cheesecake and brought there as a birthday cake for me and Jackson. The taste is out of this world. I didn't know that durian can go so well with cheese. Order it from FBB if you guys would like to know the taste. WMW was able to make it in time to eat the cake with us.

Would like to thank you guys for this nice and happy gathering. Anyone's birthday coming?

Guess what is Teckiee laughing about?
