Lucky Dessert (發記甜品), Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara

It has arrived. Alas, some nice people from Malaysia has brought the famous Hong Kong Lucky Dessert (發記甜品) to our shore. Opening the first outlet in Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara. Now I am damn jealous of those staying near there. Last year I went to Hong Kong and had dessert in Lucky Dessert there not once but twice. First time I went to their HQ in Sham Tseng and the second time went to their outlet in Mongkok. This time, I don't have to fly over to Hong Kong anymore, I just have to drive 20 minutes from my house and go to Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara.

Lucky Dessert organized a food (consists of desserts only) tasting session last Friday and I was lucky enough to be one of the invited. I think thanks to my post on Lucky Dessert Hong Kong last year, muahahaha. Once I stepped into the shop, I was greeted by a familiar pictures of celebrities that I saw in the HQ outlet in Sham Tseng.

Showcasing the Hong Kong celebrities that has been patronizing Lucky Dessert.

The deco in the outlet is the same as the modern outlets found in Hong Kong. Only the HQ kept as the old school family oriented deco that has been there for decades.

I also invited two leng luis to enjoy the dessert with me.

We also bumped into Saimatkong. He's now very into his Kia Forte.

Some of the foodies that I know were there too. Ken, Taufulou, Jocel and BBO. I later found out that Mimid3vils was there too but we weren't able to meet each other.

Taufulou happily waiting for his desserts.

The founders flew all the way from Hong Kong to teach the staff here how to make Lucky Dessert's desserts. The desserts that we're going to taste that night are made by the master from Hong Kong.

Congrats.

Okay. Let the tasting begin.

Start with Mango Roll 芒果糯米卷 (RM 12). Fresh mango meat wrapped with glutinous rice roll and sprinkled with coconut flakes. The mango is very meaty and the I like the solid texture, unlike some mangoes that is too soft.

Mango Roll 芒果糯米卷 (RM 12)

Next up, it is mango dessert again but this time it's Mango Wrapz 芒果班戈 (RM 10). Taste exactly the same as I've tasted in Hong Kong. Generous amoung of fresh diced mangoes and whipped cream. What I like is that it's not too sweet, just the right taste. Wrapped with a soft and pancake skin that has the very nice eggy taste. It's like eating crepe.

Mango Wrapz 芒果班戈 (RM 10)

Paradise Herb Italian Jell-O (RM 13) is one dessert that I wanted to eat when I was in Hong Kong but the two outlets I went to is out of stock. So I am very happy that I get to eat it here. The sauce of milk? Not too sure. Tasted a bit bland, so it will be better to eat it with the fruits. The reason it is called Italian Herb Jell-O is because it is a very long cincau that is just like a thick spaghetti. You have to give it to the creativity of the Hong Kong people of thinking up such a thing.

Paradise Herb Italian Jell-O (RM 13)

Very long cincau

Very long.

If it's Hong Kong dessert, then the Trinity Mango Delight 招牌杨枝甘露 (RM 11) is one of the signature dessert. Mango, pamelo and sago soup. Very interesting combination.

Trinity Mango Delight 招牌杨枝甘露 (RM 11)

Looking at the picture below, you would have think that it is Trinity Mango Delight but if you are there, the smell would have gave it away. This is the durian version of Trinity Delight that was created by Lucky Dessert, a break from the traditional. Trinity Durian Delight 榴莲飘香 (RM 11) is one dessert that durian lover must order. What more, they don't have to import the durian like they did in Hong Kong because durian is our local fruit here in Malaysia. So, I can say that the Trinity Durian Delight here will be better than if you eat it in Hong Kong. LOL.

It's kind of sad that the people from Hong Kong can come up with a durian dessert that us Malaysian that don't even think of.

Trinity Durian Delight 榴莲飘香 (RM 11)

Generous amount of durian meat.

After the Trinity Durian Delight, my stomach starting to cry for help already and the desserts keep on coming. Another way of doing durian dessert. This time is a warm durian dessert that takes a lot of time to prepare. Durian Krisp 焗榴莲酥皮卷 (RM 15) is recommended to be eaten while it is warm. The skin is so crispy that words and picture can't describe it, hence I took a video to show the crispiness. Crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, it just melts when I put it in my mouth.

Just when we think that is the last of it, the nice people from Lucky Dessert dish out another surprise for us. OMG. So many desserts in one meal but I'm not complaining :p

Lucky Purple Rice 金粟紫米露 (RM 8), which is purple rice sweet corn soup serves hot or cold. Quite a traditional Cantonese dessert but the one that I had else where doesn't have such a big purple rice. It's more water than purple rice. Lucky Dessert's one, there's more purple rice than water.

Phew. My stomach is so bloated after all that desserts. Now I know where to go if ever I am craving for Hong Kong dessert. Lucky Dessert will give the other dessert competitions a run of their money now that they've started to expand into this region. The outlet in Sunway Giza is just a start, there will be more outlets soon.

By the way, if you want to win two air tickets to Hong Kong then you must drop by Lucky Dessert and take pictures of the desserts and then join their Facebook Page contest. If you are not joining then please help 'Like' my picture here, so that I can win the air tickets to Hong Kong. Thanks ;)

Lan Je Steamed Tilapia, Kota Damansara

I got to know about Lan Je from KampungBoyCityGal's post. The way they describe the steamed tilapia is really hard to resists. So when my colleague asked me what do I recommend for our off shift lunch on Friday, I suggested Lan Je.

Lan Je has three outlets, the original is in Rawang (quite far), and the other two branches are in Kota Damansara and Balakong respectively. As the three of us stay near Kepong and Selayang, so the outlet in Kota Damansara is the obvious choice for us.

As I've already know what's the lunch crowd will be like during peak hour, we chose to go there at about 11.30 a.m. True enough, the lunch crowd is not there yet but there's already 4 to 5 tables taken by customers there.

To my surprise, Lan Je is a pork free restaurant but if you have watched the 15Malaysia film Halal, you will know that pork free doesn't mean Halal. As with any restaurant uses fresh market produce, the price is based on the market price of the day, which is listed on a whiteboard hanging on the wall.

We ordered a pot of boh lei (普洱 pu er tea) (lol sounds like boleh). The tauke lui (she seems to be the daughter of the boss of this outlet helping out during school holiday) asked us whether we want to order steamed tilapia for each of us. Just as she spoken, I saw the table next to us was served with one steamed tilapia per customer @_@ We declined the offer and ordered one bigger steamed tilapia mild spicy. There's a few level of steamed tilapia in term of spiciness in Lan Je, not spicy, mild spicy, very spicy and super spicy (it is the amount of cili padi they put that differs the spicy level lol). We ordered two more dishes, stir-fried choi tham (菜胆) and kungpo chicken (宫保鸡).

The first dish to reach our table is the stir-fried choi tham (菜胆). I like it very much because it is very fresh. I can feel the crispy texture once I bite into the leaf and the saltiness is just nice. Most of the saltiness comes from the fried small anchovies. I wonder where they sourced for the vegetable. I recommend this as the vegetable dish to order here.

Rating: 4/5

Next dish is kungpo chicken (宫保鸡), which is quite a disappointment, it's like the wok hei is not enough and the sauce on the chicken is a bit wet, from my point of view a good kungpo chicken, the sauce should be dry and absorbed into the chicken meat. That is why kungpo chicken is an easy dish to learn but hard to master. Make a self note, not to order kungpo chicken the next time I come here.

Rating: 2.5/5

The steamed tilapia took about 20 minutes to be ready and it was very well worth the wait. If a steamed fish is served to you in a short time, you will surely get a steamed fish that doesn't taste good. Why? Have you ever tasted nice steamed fish in wedding dinner? Because of time constraint, some restaurant steamed the fish first without the sauce, then when there's order, the cook just put the sauce and condiments on the steamed fish.

From the look at the fish eye, I already know that the tilapia is very fresh. True enough, I can't find gamey taste at all when I bite into it. The tilapia is not over or under cook either, just nice enough for the meat to be smooth and tender. No wonder each customer must order one steamed tilapia all for themselves. We ordered mild spicy. If, I have the steamed tilapia all to myself, I'll order super spicy ;)

Rating: 4.8/5

We've cleaned all three dishes. I of course finish off the fish head.

By the time we finish eating, the restaurant was already packed and there's customers waiting for table. True enough the steamed tilapia here is truly amazing. Will surely come for another visit.

Grand Launching of Nikonian Academy Discovery Center

Simon Says: Some company grabbed Cindy's jadezheng.com domain and she didn't even have chance to announce it. She now blog in teycindy.com. Remember to update your link guys.

I went to the launching of Nikonian Academy Discovery Center last Saturday. Nikonian Academy which used to be in Phileo Damansara has finally shifted to a bigger place which comprised of a four-storeys shoplot at The Strand, Kota Damansara. Instead of just being a training center for avid DSLR photographer, it nows have a Discovery Center at the ground floor where the NAF memeber and photography enthusiatic can find the range of products that is valuable to be added to a more fun filled experience of DSLR photography.

Michael Jackson were there too for the opening. (Impersonator lah)

After much speech giving and performances, Sean and Andrew finally officiated and open the door to the Discovery Center for the guests to visit and purchase items there because there's opening special price just for that day only.

The Discovery Center has loads of photography accesories such as:

Lens cleaning tools

Tripods

DSLR and lens bags

Nikonian Academy shirts and caps.

Nikonian Academy Photography Vest

There's also a range of National Geographic Photo Bag Collection. I think this is on most photographer wish list lol.

How can this be Nikonian Academy Discovery Center if there's no Nikon DSLR and lenses.

From the new entry level DSLR D5000 to the most advanced D3X.

Nikon lenses from the affordable 50mm f/1.8D AF to 300 mm f/2.8G.

I was told that even if you have the money, you won't be able to get this lens easily because of the high demand and limited stock. This is the prize for lucky draw for the customer who bought over RM 100 worth of merchandise on that day.

I happen to be able to test out the mother of all macro lens, Nikkor 85mm f 1.4, the lens in the middle of this pic here. It's yours for RM 3,900.

You can sell your Kancil and buy this lens.

Those that plan to setup your own studio, can come here and buy the studio lighting, reflector and etc.

There's still a lot of other items that is to post. One have to come here and discover it themselves for the full experience. Interested? The click here for the map.

Address:

Nikonian Academy
13, Jalan PJU 5/21,
The Strand Kota Damansara,
47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Tel: 1-700-80-NIKA (1-700-80-6452)

Going up to the 1st floor, we have one side for the photo editing class and another for a classroom lecturing style. Which is now more spacious and can accommodate more people.

Note: Photo editing class doesn't comes with Big Apple donuts.

Taking the stairs, I walked up to the 2nd floor. I got a pleasant surprise of instead of finding one, I found two photography studios or just one studio with two shooting space?? No more rush now.

Clothing and costume for the models.

The 3rd floor is the administrative office so nothing special to show there unless you want to see Andrew's desk, he used to have a room in the old office lol.

As I was saying, I got to try out the mother of all macro lens, Nikkor 85mm f 1.4 on a Nikon D3X body. Which means, its a mother of all macro photography lol. Thanks Jay for letting me testing it out. Below is a few test shot using the combination.

I took a pic of Jay checking out SMS on his phone.

The two pics below was taken by Jay focusing on different target. It's so bloody clear that it clearly shows that I haven't shave lol.

Lastly, I put here the two performances that were performed during the opening. Fire show and Michael Jackson impersonator dance. Click on the picture to watch the video.

Last but not least, congratulation to Nikonian Academy and I'll like to end this with a picture of Helen's cute son, Justin.
